1.  INTRODUCTION 

The Transformer Ratio Analysis Software is a Windows™

 

 based software program to be used with 

Vanguard Instruments Company’s line of Three-Phase Transformer Winding-Ratio Testers (ATRT-03, 
ATRT-03A, ATRT-03B). The software program operates the same with all Models of the ATRT-03. 
The name ATRT-03 will be used to address all the ATRT-03 models in this manual. 
The program allows the Model ATRT-03 to test winding turns-ratio of transformers, voltage 
regulators, and load-tap changers under the control of an IBM compatible PC. The program has three 
main features that simplify and partially automate testing when using the ATRT-03.

 The program allows users to create test plans for transformers, voltage regulators, and load-

tap changers. The user can create a transformer test plan by entering each tap voltage (high side 
and low side). Voltage regulator and Load Tap Changer test plans can be created by entering 
the neutral position tap voltages and voltage step (as a fraction). The program will 
automatically create a “Calculated Ratio” table. This eliminates the time-consuming task of 
entering tap voltages. 
The test plan can also be stored in the ATRT-03 tester memory. By using the stored test plan in 
the ATRT-03 memory, users can quickly test transformers in the field and obtain test results, 
percentage-error calculation and PASS/FAIL display. A print out from the thermal printers can 
be obtained with the ATRT-03 and ATRT-03A.

 The program allows the users to run transformer turns-ratio test directly from a PC (using the 

ATRT-03 under computer control mode). Since test results are sent electronically to the PC, no 
manual transfer of data is required, thus eliminating human error in the data collection process. 
Running a test using a test plan from the PC, the test results (ratio readings) are recorded, turns-
ratio reading percentage error is calculated and PASS/FAIL flag is also displayed.

 The same program can be used to retrieve test records stored in the ATRT-03 memory. This 

feature allows the user to test transformers in the field without the use of a PC. Test records can 
be stored in the ATRT-03 internal memory (to be retrieved and sent to the PC later). 
 

The program computes the “Measured Ratio” of the unit under test and compares it to the “Calculated 
Ratio.”  The program computes the difference and displays it as a percentage difference, which can be 
used to determine if a transformer’s windings turns-ratio is within manufacturer's specifications.  
 
The program can also store test plans and test results on any storage medium the PC may have. This 
permits users to share test plans, and to recall test results for review or printing. The test record can be 
exported to a text file format allowing the user to export the test report into WORD or EXCEL. 

NOTE 

This software package can also be used with the Models ATRT-01, 
ATRT-01B, ATRT-01D under computer control mode. This software 
package will support a single-phase transformer test only when used with 
Models ATRT-01, ATRT-01B, ATRT-01D.
