SECTION 4 REMOTE COMMUNICATIONS
Remote Communications with the UNIFLAME Series flame detector uses an RS485 Interface to carry
out communications with an IBM compatible PC running Forney’s SMARTDisplay Software. The wiring
configuration for remote communications is dependent on the distance between the detector and the PC.
For distances
less than 200 feet
, Figure 11, run the cable directly back to the burner management system.
For wiring distances
greater than 200 feet
, Figure 12, wire the twisted shielded pair of wires in a “multi-
drop” wiring configuration, and then use a terminating resistor at the detector located farthest from the
communication source.
The maximum distance for the communication wiring for all associated UNIFLAME Series detectors is
4,000 feet. The maximum number of detectors connected to the communication link is 32 detectors.
Exceeding this total wiring length or number of detectors may require the installation of bi-directional
repeaters or amplifiers. Consult the factory for additional details.
