MAINTENANCE

MAINTENANCE

DETECTING WEAR AND DAMAGE

With routine use, nuts and bolts on the chair can become

loose.  To ensure safe continuous operation of the  wheelchair,
it is important to  inspect the product EVERY MONTH for loose
nuts and bolts and re-tighten as appropriate. Check EVERY 6
MONTHS that the wheels, front forks, frame, and the upholstery
are in good condition.

CHECK BRAKE FOR FUNCTIONING

Always test the brakes EVERY MONTH by applying the

brakes to the locked position, and then trying to push the
wheelchair. If the brakes do not lock the wheels, the brakes
need to be adjusted. If adjustment does not tighten the brakes,
DO NOT use the wheelchair.

LUBRICATING THE WHEELS

Make sure that ALL wheels are free of hair, lint, and other

debris. A light grease lubricant may be applied to the ball bearing
and swivel of the casters every three months.

CLEANING THE WHEELCHAIR

Use soapy water and a soft cloth to clean the surface of the

wheelchair.  Wipe off any moisture after cleaning.  Using abrasive
clothes or other products can cause grates.

PERFORMING REGULAR MAINTENANCE

Regular maintenance of the wheelchair and accessories is

required to ensure proper operation. The casters and axle

bolts are also require check-ups for proper tightness.

CURBS

Curbs should only be attempted with the help of an attendant.
The following are instructions are for negotiating curbs. It is
important to develop safe techniques best suited to your abilities
with the help of a healthcare professional. Curbs, steps and
stairways are dangerous obstacles for any wheelchair user.
Find alternative way around such obstacles to ensure safety
of the operater. Curb cuts, ramps and designated disabled
elevators are available is most areas now.

KNOW YOUR OWN CAPABILITIES AND LIMITATIONS

Know your capabilities and limitations regarding strength and
endurance before attempting an incline or decline on the
wheelchair. Practice with a healthcare professional before you
attempt any inclines, declines, curbs, or ramps. Before you
proceed onto such obstacles, always inspect for hazards like
holes, slippery or uneven surfaces, or other obstacles. If you
cannot see the entire ramp, have someone inspect it for you.
