Appendix B: Hum loops in home theatre installations
As the same ground reference is used for video and audio inside nearly all
audio/video equipment it is essential to avoid ground loops – otherwise audio
hum/noise will likely appear.
Please take into consideration the following rules:
a) Keep all wires from one unit to another together, to prevent fields from mains cable
and CRT monitor (TV set) from inducing noise in the ground path. For instance, this
means you should keep all cables leading from your DVA player to your amplifier
together: video, analog audio and digital audio. Use cable strapping or something
similar to ensure this.
b) Use a digital audio connection instead of an analog audio connection if any noise
problems occur.
c) Keep any antenna cables away from all other cables to prevent stripes on the
screen.
d) Keep mains cable away from all other cables (avoid parallel wirering).
