Steam penetration of and air removal from hollow items (e.g. flexible tubes) are
tested with the help of a helix test, which includes a test object with an indicator
system, as defined in EN 867-5.
This object is a rolled-up tube with an indicator chamber at its end that holds
indicator strips (see Figure 12). For more information please note the detailed
operating manual of the manufacturer.

Unscrew the internal split cylinder from the indicator chamber.
♦
Fold the indicator strip in the middle so that the indicator side is covered
by the liner.
♦
Insert the indicator strip into the opening of the internal split cylinder.
♦
Screw the internal cylinder holding the indicator strip onto the indicator
chamber.

Check the integrity of the seal of the test object.
Running the Bowie & Dick test and the Helix test system
The sterilizer must be at working temperature when the Bowie & Dick test is
started (see Vacuum & Empty program).

Place the STERICLIN Bowie & Dick simulation test pack in a steel wire
basket in the lower third of the sterilizing chamber near the door.

Place the helix test pack (test object with indicator system) on a steel
wire basket near the bottom.
