A.2.7 Range Determination

Once the seawater signal has been removed, the target voltage is interpreted to give the distance
between the coil and the target. This voltage falls off according to an approximate sixth root law. The
voltage is first divided by the target scaling value. The exact algorithm used to determine range is
beyond the scope of this manual, since correcting for the exact nature of the coil response is complex.

When the target is close to the coils, all three coils are used to determine the position. The differences
between the port and centre, and starboard and centre coils are taken then used to compute range. If
the sum of these differences is less than the threshold, or any coil is less than the threshold, then only
two coils are used to make the calculation. The two coil calculation is also able to adapt to the position
of the target, using the centre and one other coil at larger lateral ranges.
