56 TROUBLESHOOTING
7.1 INTRODUCTION
This section contains instructions for troubleshooting the equipment following a malfunction. Each
symptom of trouble for a component or system is followed by a list of probable causes of the trouble and
suggested procedures to be followed to eliminate the cause.
The procedures listed should be performed in the order in which they are listed, although the order may be
varied if the need is indicated by conditions under which the trouble occurred. In any event, the procedures,
which can be performed in the least amount of time and with the removal or disassembly of the fewest
parts, should be performed first.
7.2 COMPRESSOR WILL NOT START
POSSIbLE CAUSE REMEDY
Main disconnect switch open Close switch.
Line fuse(s) blown Replace fuse(s).
Control circuit breaker tripped Reset breaker.
Motor overload Reset motor starter overload.
If machine still will not start, check sizing and adjustment of
overloads.
Check motor starter contacts for pitting.
Low incoming line voltage Check all voltages. If voltage is low or imbalanced, consult power
company.
Open compressor discharge temperature
(CDT) sensor
Replace CDT sensor.
Defective control relay Replace control relay (when applicable).
Power failure Refer to 5.6 Restarts on page 44 .
Unit filled with oil Inlet valve is leaking. Replace inlet valve.
Unit failure Replace unit.
7.3 MACHINE WILL NOT bUILD UP FULL DISCHARGE PRESSURE
POSSIbLE CAUSE REMEDY
Air demand is too great Repair system air leaks, Add compressor capacity to satisfy
demand.
Dirty air filter Change element as required.
Solenoid valve defective Repair or replace solenoid valve.
7.4 RECEIVER PRESSURE VENTING THROUGH bLOWDOWN
POSSIbLE CAUSE REMEDY
Defective check valve portion of minimum
pressure valve
Repair or replace check valve.
7.5 MACHINE SHUTS DOWN WITH AIR DEMAND PRESENT
POSSIbLE CAUSE REMEDY
Loss of control voltage Reset breakers. If trouble persists, check transformer voltages.
Low incoming voltage Consult power company.
Excessive operating pressure Improperly adjusted or defective control pressure. Readjust or
replace. Check unload pressure settings.
Separator requires maintenance. Check separator differential
under full load conditions. Differential pressure should be less
than 10 psi.
Open compressor discharge temperature (CDT) Monitor temperature: normal operating discharge temperature
should be 160–220°F (100°F above ambient). Shutdown is set at
240°F.
Cooling airflow restricted. Clean cooler and check for proper
ventilation.
Ambient temperature is too high. Provide sufficient ventilation.
Low lubricant level. Add lubricant.
Clogged oil filter. Change oil filter element.
Cooler thermostat not functioning properly. Replace thermostat.
Defective CDT sensor. Replace CDT sensor.
