Chapter 3 Hardware Features
Updating With the USB Cable
Software updates for your Luminex Captioner Student Edition, when available, can be easily
downloaded from the Stenograph web site. Once downloaded onto your computer, you can load the
software update onto your Luminex over a USB cable. For more information about updating the
Luminex see
Appendix A
.
Connect for Writing Realtime
To connect your Luminex Captioner/Student Edition to your computer for realtime writing, you must
have
one
of the following:
·
a USB cable connection which requires using a USB compatible CAT software, such as Case
CATalyst version 4.096 or higher. A micro USB cable is included with your Luminex Captioner
Student Edition. Check with your CAT software vendor for compatibility information.
·
a virtual serial port connection via USB cable. The virtual serial port connection is compatible
with any CAT software that accepts a serial connection and Stentura protocol. See
USB Virtual
Serial Port Communication
for more information.
USB Communications
To communicate with via USB, you must be using USB compatible CAT software and have installed
the
Luminex Captioner/Student Edition USB driver
on your computer.
1. Ensure your Luminex Captioner/Student Edition and computer are turned
On
and are fully booted.
2. Each end of the USB cable has a different connection plug. Insert the appropriate end of the micro
USB cable into the USB port on the back of the Luminex Captioner/Student Edition and the other
end into a USB port on the computer.
3. Start your CAT software.
4. Set your realtime options. Select one of the following based on the Case CATalyst version you are
using. This is a USB connection, COM port settings do not apply.
·
Case CATalyst V16 or higher, select
Stenograph Writer USB
.
·
Case CATalyst V7 through V15,
select élan - USB
.
5. Write a few strokes on the Luminex Captioner/Student Edition before starting realtime and start
translate in your CAT software.
If the USB realtime connection is active when you take a break, the realtime screen may not
display new steno strokes when you resume writing. This may happen when the USB port
becomes inactive after remaining idle for a period of time. If this occurs, disconnect the USB cable
from the back of the writing machine and reconnect it. The realtime file is not affected. Reconnect
the cable to display the new steno strokes on the realtime screen. See the Troubleshooting
section for details on disabling USB port power saving features to avoid an inactive connection.
If the Memory becomes full while writing realtime, the realtime display on the Luminex
