3.3 Manual drum and external PSU
The manual drum (Figure 2.6) is a light-weight system
that can house up to 250m of cable. The external PSU
(Figure 2.8) connects to the manual drum using the link
cable (Item 25 in Figure 2.9). The single end connects to
the manual drum and the split end terminals connect to
the manual drum connection panel on the rear side of the
PSU’s handle.
CAUTION! Do not connect the command module
to the external PSU link cable connection terminals
(item 23 in Figure 2.8) as this may damage the system.
3.4 Powered drum
The powered drum (Figure 2.5) features a motorized cable
reel compartment that can store up to 250 meters of
cable. The cable is housed in a user-replaceable cassette.
For information on changing this cassette, please refer to
Appendix 9.5.
NOTE: The drum is capable of retrieving deployed
cable; however it is not designed to retrieve the crawler
without the crawler’s added assistance.
3.5 Command module
3.5.1 Mounting
You can mount the command module to the powered
drum using the support stand. The stand is fitted to the
drum chassis and the command module fits on top.
Once fitted to the drum, you can adjust the height of the
command module to suit your preference of working
environment.
If using a manual drum you can mount the command
module to the support stand, which is clamped to the
drum carrying handle.
3.5.2 Power, data and video
When using the manual or powered drum, a single link
cable (Item 24 in Figure 2.9) supplies the command
module with power, data and video. The link cable socket
is located on the rear side of the command module (Item
5 in Figure 2.2).
Mount the command module and connect the controller
cable to the controller terminal on the powered drum or
external PSU (Item 8 in Figure 2.7).
3.5.3 Compact Flash card
Insert a high quality Compact Flash card into the card
slot, which is located inside the Command Module’s I/O
panel (Item 10 in Figure 2.3).
Please note the orientation of the card before you attempt
to insert it into the command module. Although a groove
on the card will prevent you from inserting the card the
wrong way this can be forced, which will damage the
Compact Flash card receptacle.

including selecting high quality cards, refer to Section 6.
3.5.4 Keyboard
The supplied keyboard is connected via the PS/2
connector in the I/O panel (Item 11 in Figure 2.3).
NOTE: Only the supplied keyboard is compatible with
the command module.
3.5.5 Headset
The optional headset allows you to record and hear
audio commentary in your video recordings. Connect the
headset to the audio socket in the I/O panel (Item 12 in
Figure 2.3).
3.6 External video equipment
You can connect a range of video equipment to the
system using the video jacks on the command module
(Item 8 in Figure 2.3), powered drum or the external PSU
(Item 9 in Figure 2.7). This can include video recording
and playback equipment or external monitors.
These devices are connected using standard composite
video cable with RCA or BNC-type connectors as
appropriate (not supplied).
WARNING! Connected equipment must be
earthed according the equipment manufacturer’s
documentation. Failure to comply may result in
electric shock and damage to the flexitrax system.
