The reverse osmos is membrane is per meable by many gases includ in g hydro gen su lfide, the
gas that causes rotten egg s to sme ll the way they do. If there are bad odors in the fe ed water
they wil l go through the me mbrane and the produc t water will be affected. Usually the
source of the odor is from the decay of planktonic cr eatur es trapped in the se a strainer and
prefilters . These tiny oxy gen lovin g creatures soon suffocate and die inside the prefilter
housin gs when the unit is shut down. Once all the available oxy gen i s consumed, anaerobic
bacteria begin to grow, caus in g the odor. If a unit being u sed frequently begins to make
smel ly water, it w il l be the prefilters that are th e source of the problem. Thi s occurs in a
week or two in cold cl imates, but in less than one ni ght in very warm waters like the Sea of
Cortes or Red Sea. These bacteria can spr ead throughout the wa termaker, and b egin to grow
on the membrane, causing poor water quality and hi gh feed pressures.
Fi ll in g the system w ith fresh water after ev ery use greatly slow s this process, al low in g the
automated spec tra units to opera te with less frequent prefilter changes, but units operated for
only an hour or so a day wi ll probab ly need to have th e filters changed due to odor before
they are dirty enough to restrict wat er flow. Prefilters can be clean ed gently a li m ited num-
ber of times. After shuttin g down the unit remove the used prefilters and instal l a clean set.
Leave the housings fu l l of air unti l the next use. Given gentle handl in g, prefi lters can be re-
used up to 3 times.
Bad smel lin g product water is usua lly caused by bad sme ll in g feed water, but c an also be
caused by a fouled membrane if the membrane has been left unpickled. If the unit makes
smel ly but not salty water after a long id le period and the prefilters are new, the smell can be
eli minated by runnin g the unit unpressur ized for an hour or so to flu sh the membrane.
Odors in the product water can also be eli minated by adding a charcoal fi lter in the product
