The function of the charco al filter element, p/n FT - F TC - CC, is to remove any chlorine in the
fresh water flush water supply. It also removes any particulate matter. The charco al filter we
use removes 99.7% of the chlorine. Beware when buying other charcoal filters. If they don’t
specify the percen tage of chlorine removed, don’t use them. The cheap ones in most cases wi ll
only remove 60 or 70%. A lso, there are aft ermarket filters which are very close to, but not
exactly, the same dimensions that wi l l not seal properly in the housin g. The membrane can
only handle s mal l amounts of chlor ine for short periods without dama ge. The chlorine w i ll
damage the bondin g agent in the me mbrane in a very short time. So if you ski mp on the char-
coal filter you w il l toast a $450.00 membrane on the first flush. The other factor is the flow
rate th at th e filter can handle. Bec ause th e chlorine is deactivated by a ch emical reaction with
the char coal, it must remain in contact with the ch arcoal for sufficient period of time for the
reaction to be complete. The filter we use can handle 1.5 gal lons (6 litres) per m inute flow,
and are good for 5000 gal lons (12,000 l itres) at 1.5 GPM, or six months, whichever comes
first. Regard less of the flow the charcoal loses its effectiveness after six months.
