Reference:
PCM-3348HR Operation Manual, “2-4-2 Selecting the Word Length.”

For the PCM-3348HR, select either 24 bits or 16 bits using the WORD LENGTH
selector in the system control block.
Tapes recorded with a word length of 16 bits are compatible with those recorded
with conventional DASH-format devices.

Note

Unlike that of the sampling frequency, the value of the word length used in
recording is not automatically selected in playback. Be sure to select an appropriate
value before starting playback.
