6.3 Safety Advice and Precautions
6.3.1 General
•
Always ensure that use of the module is permitted. The module may present a hazard if used in
proximity to personal medical electronic devices. As a rule, the module must not be used in hospitals,
airports or planes.
•
You are responsible for observing your country's safety standards, and where applicable the relevant
wiring rules.
•
Never use the module at a gas station, blasting area or in any other explosives environment
•
Never operating the module close to other electronic devices, such as antennas, television sets, and
radios. They may cause electromagnetic interference.
•
Never try to dismantle the module yourself. There are no components inside the module that can be
serviced by the user. If you attempt to dismantle the module, you may invalidate the warranty.
•
To protect the power supply cables and meet the fire safety requirements, it is recommended that the
electrical circuits are supplied with a power regulator. The power regulator should be placed as close to
the terminals of the power supply as possible.
•
Do not connect any incompatible component or product to the GM-41. Note, Sony Ericsson does not
warrant against defects, non-conformities or deviations caused thereby.
6.4 Module
Shutdown
The shutdown sequence can be initiated either via the hardware pin or via the AT command “CFUN”. Furthermore,
power cannot be safely removed from the device until it has indicated that the shutdown sequence has completed.
If it was shutdown via the hardware pin, the device will set the hardware pin active high. If the AT command
“CFUN=0” was used, a "SHUTDOWN COMPLETE" message will be sent back to the application. During the
shutdown phase, the device must perform several functions. These functions include, but are not limited to,
graceful deregistration from the network, saving state information to non-volatile memory and placing the various
subcomponents in an inactive state. These tasks are important for maintaining the smooth operation of the wireless
network and ensuring that the device will be able to boot-up properly. There are cases where the application (the
customer’s hardware) and the GM41 will lose power due to external circumstances that may be beyond the control
of the application. All of these power loss cases are considered failure modes as they fall outside the normal
operating envelope for which the device was designed. Sony Ericsson telemetry devices do incorporate
functionality that will attempt to recover gracefully from these failure modes. However, due to the external factors
that directly affect the operation of the module, the specifics of the controlling software in the customer application
and the dependence on the particular network on which each device may be participating, it is not possible to
guarantee that these failure mode recovery measures will be successful. Sony Ericsson is not able to guarantee
that the GM41 will be able to fully recover from a power-loss induced failure mode.
6.5 SIM
Card
•
Before handling the SIM card in your application, ensure that you are not charged with static electricity.
Use proper precautions to avoid electrostatic discharges. The module must be switched off before the
SIM card is installed in your application.
•
When the SIM card hatch is opened, the SIM card connectors lie exposed under the SIM card holder.
CAUTION: Do not touch these connectors! If you do, you may release an electrical discharge that could
damage the module or the SIM card.
•
When designing your application, the SIM card's accessibility should be taken into account. We always
recommend that you have the SIM card protected by a PIN code. This will ensure that the SIM card
cannot be used by an unauthorized person.
