Introduction

The Basic Multiplex Communications (BMUX Comms) Module (4100-6065) is used to interface
existing 2120 transponders to the 4100U or 4100ES Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP). As such,
the module is essentially a physical media and protocol converter from 4100 Comms (RUI) to
2120 Comms (DC Loop). The module is installed into an FACP and is designed to communicate
to 2120 transponders and DC Loop communications peripherals such as DC Loop to RS-232
converters.

The 2120 Comms Loop is a two-wire interface with the BMUX Comms Module acting as a
master-transmitter. On each BMUX Comms Module, there is one DC Loop Communications
channel, and a maximum of two cards can be installed per system. The protocol is designed so that
slaves (transponders) respond to their address match by replying to a BMUX Comms Module
command. When used in style 6 configurations, the card includes primary and secondary DC Loop
lines, so that a single open on any line does not prevent communication to the transponders.

This publication contains the instructions to install the electronic modules into a 4100U/4100ES
master panel for a 2120 BMUX to 4100U/4100ES retrofit. It covers the installation of the 4100U/
4100ES BMUX Comms Module into a 4100U/4100ES master control panel. Also covered in this
manual is the Flex-35 configured as a Riser Amplifier to replace the BMUX riser amplifiers, and
the 4100U/4100ES master phone to replace the 2120 master phone.
