Chapter 4:
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
4.1
General
Your Scout is equipped with a 12-volt DC electrical system
and could be equipped with an optional battery charging sys-
tem. The battery charger draws current from shore power
outlets at dockside. The DC system draws current from two
onboard batteries.
Your boat and engine charging system is designed for 12-
volt, lead acid wet cell marine batteries. They will require
similar maintenance as those found in automobiles.
All wires in the electrical systems are color coded to make
identifying circuits easier. Wiring schematics have been in-
cluded with this manual to aid in following an individual cir-
cuit of the boat.
4.2
12-Volt System
The 12-volt system is a standard marine system. There are
two batteries located in a compartment behind an opening
panel in the forward wall of the head compartment in the
Sportfish, behind a panel in the bilge below the port captain
chair on the Dorado and behind a panel at the rear of the
cabin on the Abaco. They are controlled by a battery selector
switch. The batteries can be charged by the engine or by the
optional battery charger when hooked to shore power.
All 12-volt power to the 12-volt accessories through individual
circuit breakers located in the 12-volt switch panels. A main
helm circuit breaker, on or near the helm switch panel or near
the selector switch, protects the system from an overload.
Other circuit breakers or fuses, located near the selector switch
or on the helm switch panel, protect the circuit for the auto-
matic float switch for the bilge pump, and the stereo memory
(if the optional stereo is installed.) The selector switch panel
for the Abaco is equipped with circuit breakers for the bilge
pump auto switch, CO detector, stereo, stereo memory, 12-
volt receptacle, helm main and trim tabs. Most 12-volt ac-
cessories are operated directly by switches in the helm acces-
sory switch panel or separate accessory switch panels.
Main breakers or fuses located on the engine protect the ig-
nition systems and gauges. Yamaha engine electrical circuits
are protected by fuses located in a fuse panel on the side of
the engine. The fuse panel is equipped with a spare fuse for
each circuit. Always replace fuses used with the fuse speci-
fied by Yamaha or your engine manufacturer. Refer to the
engine owner’s manual for more information on the fuses, fuse
panels or circuit breakers on your engines.
PROPER FUSE OR BREAKER PROTECTION MUST
BE PROVIDED FOR ALL 12-VOLT EQUIPMENT
ADDED. DO NOT OVERLOAD THE ACCESSORY
CIRCUIT BREAKERS OR OTHER CIRCUITRY
THROUGH ADDITIONAL 12-VOLT EQUIPMENT.
Batteries and Battery Switches
The DC electrical system on your boat is designed for wet
cell, marine batteries. Do not attempt to use gel cell, ab-
sorbed wet mat or other non wet cell batteries unless they are
compatible with wet cell charging systems. The engine charg-
ing system and the optional battery charger are not designed
to recharge gel cell and some absorbed wet mat batteries which
could cause unusually short battery life, engine starting prob-
lems and damage to the DC charging systems. You also should
not mix the size or brand of batteries. Always consult your
Scout dealer before changing the type of batteries in your
boat.
Your boat has provision for two batteries. These batteries
should be of the size and capacity recommended by the manu-
facturer of your engine. See the engine owner's manual. These
specifications should be considered to be the minimum size
