Note that using the external loopback
does not
load defaults permanently. The startup configuration is not altered. If you disconnect the
loopback and reboot, the LAN35Mx08 will return to its previously-saved startup configuration. To permanently restore the switch to the
defaults, one must run the command
delete flash:startup-config
and then reboot the switch. This method is described in an earlier section of
this manual. One the startup configuration has been deleted, the loopback may be removed.

Performing a Firmware Upgrade
From time to time, RTD may offer firmware upgrades for the LAN35Mx08. These upgrades may be installed by the user. Running the latest
available firmware is highly recommended. Running an older firmware version may have security implications.
To upgrade the firmware of a running system, the CEServices.dat (or .gz) file in the release package must be transferred to the switch. This
may be done over the network via the Web GUI or ICLI. It is also possible to transfer the file via the USB Serial Console. After the upgrade is
complete, the LAN35Mx08 will automatically reboot. Ensure that any configuration settings that have not been copied to the startup
configuration are done so before performing an upgrade (see section 6.3.2). Network communication will be interrupted during the reboot, so
one should avoid scheduling a firmware update during a period of critical network activity.
The managed switch contains TWO copies of the firmware, a primary and a backup. The switch is typically booted from the primary firmware.
When a firmware upgrade is deployed, the currently-active version becomes the backup. The newly-deployed version becomes the active one.
The backup firmware is useful for situations where the primary firmware is corrupt somehow (e.g. failed firmware update due to a power
interruption). If the primary is determined to be corrupt, the RedBoot boot loader will automatically attempt to boot from the backup. It is also
possible to manually switch from the primary to the backup using the
firmware swap
command. This is useful for situations where one wishes
to roll back to an older firmware version.
