Basic Recording with the VS-880

INPUT MIX & TRACK MIX Mode
The other Mixer Modes are INPUT MIX & TRACK MIX. These modes are basically two parts of the same
recording and playback ÒMixÓ mode. It is in this mode that the VS-880 can be used as a 14 channel mixer:
6 Inputs (INPUT MIX) and 8 recorded Tracks (TRACK MIX). Keep in mind, the maximum number of Tracks
you can record simultaneously is four.
To enter INPUT MIX/TRACK MIX Mode:
1) Hold SHIFT and press SELECT (under MIXER MODE) to choose INPUT MIX/TRACK MIX mode.

INPUT MIX
mode allows you to have up to six audio sources mixed in with eight recorded Tracks Ð all
going to one stereo output, either analog (MASTER OUT) or digital (DIGITAL OUT).
For example, letÕs say youÕre synchronizing your sequencer (computer or keyboard workstation) with the VS-
880 via MIDI cables. The VS-880 can drive the sequencer (the sequencerÕs MIDI clock is slaved to the VS-
880), which in turn triggers a few synthesizers that are then mixed into the audio Inputs of the VS-880.
Maybe the sequenced Tracks are piano, bass, and drums and you have recorded vocals, sax and guitar on
the VS-880, the whole thing can be mixed to DAT (see previous SAMPLE SETUP) with EQ and effects
from the VS-880 in one shot. That means you can make a first generation
digital
master tape!
In INPUT MIX mode, the faders and pan knobs control only the audio sources plugged into the Inputs on
the back of the VS-880, not the recorded Tracks. Each physical Input (on the back panel of the VS-880) is
automatically assigned to its corresponding mixer channel (Input 1
c
mixer channel 1, Input 2
c
mixer
channel 2, etc. and digital Input Left and Right to channels 5 and 6 respectively). An analog to digital
converter can be used to connect analog signals to the digital Inputs.
Many DAT machines can be used as an analog to digital converter. If you plug a microphone or
line level instrument into the DAT machineÕs analog audio Input, and run the digital audio out of the
DAT to the VS-880Õs digital audio in, you can effectively give yourself two more analog Inputs on top
of the four already present in the VS-880. Keep in mind, you will probably have to put the DAT in
Record/Pause mode to get the audio to pass through

Notice that the audio signal (after it passes through the EQ, Fader, and Pan) can be routed to a stereo
record buss (Track 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8) or the MIX buss (speakers or headphones). Therefore, the audio level
recorded to disk is controlled by the fader. If youÕre recording to both Tracks of the stereo pair (Track 1-2 for
example), the channel's pan position (left to right) is recorded as it is set on the panning knob.
Just like in INPUT
c
TRACK mode, with the VS8F-1 Effects Expansion Board, you can place two effects in
one of three places in the above diagram: 1) between the EQ and the Fader (Pre-Fader), 2) after the Pan
(Post-Fader), and 3) Insert which routes the dry, post EQ signal into the VS8F-1 and then sends only the
effected signal back to the fader.
