Basic Recording with the VS-880

Sample Setup
The VS-880 can be integrated into a large variety of studio environments. Below, we have put together an
example of a setup that you might find in a typical home or project studio.
Serial
DAT Recorder
MIDI Interface
MIDI Sync via
MTC, MMC
Audio from
Keyboard or
Mixer
Digital Mix to DAT
MIDI
XP-50/80 Music Workstation
In the above setup the XP-80 Music Workstation is pictured, but for the purpose of our example, any
multitimbral MIDI synthesizer could be substituted. If you have a workstation keyboard with a built-in
sequencer that responds to MIDI clock like the XP-50 or XP-80, it could fill the role of the computer and
MIDI interface as well.
The XP-80 keyboard is pictured here as the sound source being recorded into the VS-880, but this could
just as easily be a guitar plugged directly into the VS-880 with one cable (using the VS8F-1 Effects
Expansion Board for the pre-amp and effects processing) or a microphone.
The DAT machine in this picture is being used as a mix down destination. This is a common way of
making a digital master of a song. A DAT machine can also be used as an Input source as well. For
example, you may have taken a portable DAT recorder to a remote location or to a live session and you
recorded some great material that you now want to integrate with other Tracks on the VS-880. This
material can be played digitally from the DAT machine to the VS-880 with no loss of fidelity or increase in
noise.
Though not pictured, the audio generated from the VS-880 can be heard either through headphones or
from an amplified speaker system.
