CONNECTIONS
Now that you have a basic understanding of how the front panel is laid-out, letÕs take a look behind the VS-
880 and get acquainted with the connections.

Going from left to right on the above diagram, letÕs go through each connector. To the right of the power
cable connection and the power switch (which are fairly self explanatory) is the SCSI connector.
SCSI (Small Computer System Interface)
SCSI is a protocol for high-speed recording and data transfer between computer devices. For our purposes,
the VS-880 is a computer device that has all the recording hardware and software built in. The SCSI port
on the VS-880 is 25-pin/female. Many peripheral SCSI devices use 50-pin connectors, so it may be
necessary for you to purchase a SCSI adapter or a 25-pin to 50-pin cable from your local
computer/electronics store. If you connect a stand-alone hard drive to the VS-880 SCSI port you can use it
to record onto in realtime, and/or backup songs from the VS-880Õs internal hard drive or removable Jaz
drive. The VS-880 formats up to 1GB (Gigabyte) partitions and can have up to 4 partitions on each SCSI
drive. The maximum number of SCSI devices that you can have connected to the VS-880 is seven. Make
sure that the last device in your SCSI chain is terminated. In many cases you will have only one SCSI
device connected to the VS-880, which makes it the last device as well, so it must be terminated.
MIDI IN and OUT
The MIDI ports on the VS-880 are very versatile, giving even more functionality to the VS-880 than can be
accessed from the front panel. For example, if you connect the VS-880 MIDI OUT to the MIDI IN of a
sequencer, you can record the fader movements from the VS-880 mixer. When you play the sequence
back, (sequencer MIDI OUT to VS-880 MIDI IN) the volume levels of each Track will change accordingly.
DIGITAL IN and OUT
Next over to the right is the Digital buss consisting of Digital Audio In and Out. The Digital In port allows
information from an external digital audio source (CD player, DAT machine) to be transferred (recorded)
into the VS-880. Likewise, the Digital Out allows the VS-880 to transmit digital audio data to an external
recording device (DAT machine, MiniDisc recorder, CD recorder). Besides recording and playback, the
Digital In and Out are also used as a means of backing up and restoring data from the VS-880. You can
backup the VS-880 data to digital audio tape (DAT).
FOOTSWITCH
The Footswitch jack is a port into which you can plug in a momentary switch (i.e. DP-2, DP-6, FS-5U) to
activate certain operations. For example, if you set the footswitch to record, you could use a DP-2 pedal to
activate Punch In/Out, keeping your hands free to play your guitar or keyboard. Other footswitch functions
include Play/Stop, Tap Marker, Previous and Next.
PHONES
The Phones jack is where you would plug in a set of headphones. Use the PHONES knob on the front panel
to adjust the volume. What you hear from the Phones jack is the same as you would hear from the Master
Out with speakers connected.
INPUT B
These Inputs are analog RCA jacks and are designed to accept the output from most instruments or devices
that use RCA type connectors (i.e. CD player or tape deck). Any Input can be routed to any Track, and you
can record up to four Tracks at a time. On the front panel, there are four knobs labeled INPUT SENS that
control the Input volume of the four Input jacks.
