ROADTREK TIPS - ONAN MICROLITE GENERATORS
FROM SERVICE, WARRANTY AND PARTS MANAGER
Here are a few helpful hints to ensure satisfactory performance of your Onan MicroLite generator.
The main 12 volt battery switch at the monitor panel must be in the on position before generator start up. This will
ensure ongoing charge to the auxiliary battery. Be aware, the fuel pick up for the generator is set at the ¼ level
(approximate) of your gasoline tank. Your generator should provide adequate power for operating the AC and
microwave oven at the same time, provided the AC is started first.
The generator must be exercised (operate under load by running the AC) for at least 1 hour monthly. Lack of
exercise can cause moisture build up and fuel system damage (varnishing) that make the generator run poorly.
If you frequently travel at high altitudes or in extreme temperatures, be aware that your generator can lose power
in low density air caused by such conditions. Gasoline generators can be adjusted for high altitude by Onan certified
service dealers. It’s a good practice to check the oil frequently, or every 8 hours of operating time since the engine
can shut down with improper oil levels. Do not check the oil level when the generator is running.
The propane fueled generator (Roadtrek RS Adventurous model) does not have the same exercising demand or
altitude adjustment. Avoid starting the generator while the vehicle engine is running. This (DC) load could trip the
fuse in the auto battery circuit if charge demand is high. For propane fuel supply, always open the supply valve at
the tank slowly to prevent the safety shut off from being activated.
The gasoline powered Onan generator is not compatible with E-85 (85% Ethanol) fuel blends.
Avoid use of E-85 in generator equipped FlexFuel vehicles.
Onan has an official handbook which details generator operation, maintenance and trouble shooting, safety
precautions, winter storage and more. These handbooks are available at Onan certified service dealers or see
www.funroads.com.
INVERTER/BATTERY SUMMARY NOTES AND TROUBLE SHOOTING:
- Ensure the main 12 volt switch is in the on position prior to connecting unit to shore power.
- The 750 watt inverter itself uses about 1.25 amps to operate. When dry camping turn off the inverter to conserve
battery power. Turn off the main 12 volt switch when the vehicle is not in use for a period of time.
- Ensure the inverter is in the auto position and all dip switches are correctly configured. (see inverter manual)
- Inverter will shut down if battery voltage drops below 10.5 amps. (approximate)
- Check all circuit breakers are on at the distribution panel.
- The inverter is equipped with indicator lights. This allows the user to tell at a glance if operational problems exist.
See the inverter operation manual for details
- Inverter will supply 110 volt AC to the galley and AV cabinet receptacles. This output is limited to about 7 amps
which will operate small appliances only.
- The coffee maker current draw is near the inverter output limit, thus the appliance cannot be used without
revising the dip switch settings.
- Dim or fluttering 12 volt interior lights is usually indicative of low battery power. Start the vehicle engine. If the
lights are bright while the battery is being charged through the automotive side, this confirms a low battery.
