2.3 Piping Con
fi
gurations
The NFPA 13D standard de
fi
nes three types of piping systems that
are allowed to be used in residential occupancies stating that piping
con
fi
gurations shall be permitted to be gridded, looped or straight-
run, or to be combinations thereof.
Of the three aforementioned con
fi
gurations:
- Gridded systems provide the best hydraulic characteristics for
pressure/
fl
ow calculations.
- Looped systems provide hydraulic characteristics better than
straight-run systems, but not as good as gridded systems.
- Straight-run system provide the least hydraulic characteristics.
2.3.1 Gridded System
A gridded system is a sprinkler system connected by multiple branch
lines. An activated sprinkler will be provided with water from both
sides, while other branch lines help transfer the water.
