A Word About Electrolysis
Electrolysis is the decomposition of com-
pounds, such as metals, exposed to an elec-
tric current. For boat owners, electrolysis is a
common occurrence. Using a shore power
AC electrical system on the boat includes an
earth ground circuit that “grounds” all
onboard metal parts to the earth on shore.
This circuit provides the protection against
hazardous shocks, but unfortunately it also
creates an electrolytic current which causes
the decomposition of all submerged metal.
SOLUTIONS TO ELECTROLYSIS
IMPORTANT
It is your responsibility to periodically
inspect and replace the sacrificial
zinc anodes. Damage resulting from
electrolytic corrosion is not covered
by the warranty. Additional zinc
anodes may need to be installed on
your boat as recommended for your
region.
Sacrificial zinc anodes
, installed by the deal-
er and at the factory, protect the hardware
that is exposed to the water. Electrolysis
attacks the softest or least “noble” metals
first. Because zinc is a less “noble” metal it
will decompose before the more “noble” met-
als. There are zinc anodes attached to the
trim tabs. Your dealer will install additional
zinc anodes to areas such as the rudders.
Propeller shaft brushes are installed at the
factory. These brushes are bonded to the
copper bonding strip in the engine compart-
ment. Zinc anodes on the propeller shaft are
not necessary because of the propeller
bonding brushes.
A zinc anode is also used to protect metal
that is exposed to seawater. The salt in sea-
water causes a galvanic action which
decomposes metals.
A Ground Circuit Isolator
is installed to pre-
vent the flow of relatively low electrolytic cur-
rents. It will, however, provide a path for cat-
astrophic, short-circuit currents which are
sufficient to actuate circuit breakers.
A Word About Bonding
Inboard engines installed in non-metallic
hulls do not provide shielding or adequate
grounding. Rampage Yachts uses a copper
bonding strip in the engine compartment to
solve this problem. All metal parts of your
boat, the radar arch, the rudder shaft, the
bowrails, etc. are bonded to this common
ground. The terminal strip located behind the
dash panel is linked to the landing strip via a
single #6 green wire. The AC and DC
ground wires also meet at the bonding strip.
Bonding helps minimize electrolysis, it pro-
vides a common ground for radio interfer-
ence signals, and it minimizes radio frequen-
cy interference (RFI) from the boat by con-
necting the metal parts to form a shield.
