If youchoosenottoaddthefluid(orhavealready
added the fluid but choose torunsmoke-free),turnoff
the smoke unit switch located undertheenginebody.
When the smoke output while running the engine
begins todiminish,addanother 10-15 drops of
smoke fluidorturnthesmokeunitoff.
When storing the unit for long periods of time, you
may want to add about 15dropsoffluidtoprevent
the wick fromdryingout.
Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage, add
another 25dropsoffluid,letting the wicksoak
up the fluid for 15 minutes priortooperation.
If you experience poor or nosmokeoutput when the
smoke unitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktosee
if it has become hard, blackened, and unabsorbent
around the heatingelement. Remove the boiler as shown
below. Remove thesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe
locomotive's body (see right). After removing the chassis
and inspection cover screws, lift theinspectionplateaway
and inspect the wick. If it is darkly discolored andhard,it
should be replaced. When priming new wick add 40 drops
.
Failure eithertoadd fluid to the unit or to turn it
off may damagethesmokeunitheatingelement
and/or wicking material.
