Cleaning the Wheels, Tires and Track
Traction Tire Replacement Instructions
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups
for dirt and buildup, whichcancausepoorelectrical
contact and traction andprematurely wear outthe
neoprenetractiontires. Wheels and tires can be
cleaned usingdenatured (not rubbing) alcohol applied
with a cotton swab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid
and a clean rag or denatured (notrubbing) alcohol.
Unplug the transformer and wipe the rails ofthetrack,
turning theragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusing
cleanclothontherails. Because the manufacturing
process leaves a coatingonRealTrax center rail,youshouldcleantherailsafterthefirst
30 minutesof use(you may notice anelectrical smell during initial use as the coating
wears off; this is normal). Thereafter, keep an eye on the track and clean it whenitgets
dirty toensuregoodelectrical contact and tolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof
flanged drivers. While thesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat
some point.
ProtoSmoke Unit Operation
®
This steamlocomotivecontains a smoke unit that outputs smoke through the smokestack
ontheboileroftheengine. The smoke unitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand
wick that soaks upandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke.
The smokeisthenforcedoutofthestackbyasmallelectricfan.
Withafeweasymaintenancesteps, youshouldenjoytrouble-free smoke unit operation
for years.
When preparingtorunthisengine, add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe
smokestack. We recommend M.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe, LGB, or LVTS fluids (a
small pipette of ProtoSmoke fluidisincluded). Do not overfill the unit or the fluid
mayleakoutandcoattheinteriorenginecomponents.

Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from
thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. Thesebolts
canbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.

Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive
wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains.
Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol.
Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead
screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel.
Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand
reinstall thetire. Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating.
Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. Usearazorbladetotrimaway
anyexcesstir ethatdoesn'tseatitselfinsidethegrooveproperly.
