Drive Installation
The ES2486dc is compatible with 2.5-inch hard drives and 2.5-inch solid-state drives.
Drive Configuration
The ES2486dc supports the following drive configurations.
Configuration
Description
SSDs only
Use only solid-state drives (SSDs) for I/O intensive workloads and business-
critical storage.
HDDs only
Use only hard disk drives (HDDs) for optimized cost effectiveness. This
configuration is suitable for storing cold data and running applications that
require sequential data access, such as video editing and surveillance
software.
Hybrid
Use a combination of SSDs and HDDs to balance cost and performance. In
addition to high input/output operations per second (IOPS), the ES2486dc also
supports creating an SSD read cache to further improve storage performance.
This configuration is especially suitable for virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI)
and web servers.
When using both SSDs and HDDs, QNAP recommends installing SSDs in
drive bays 1 to 4.
Note
The NAS uses drive bays 1 to 4 for system configuration and drive bays 5 to 24 for data
storage. This prevents data storage operations from interfering with the basic operations of
the NAS and allows for easier migration of drives used for data storage.
