Power Failures
An integral backup-battery allows the profile to continue running for 1 minute following a
loss of mains power although the solenoid valve and heaters will cease to operate. If mains
power is restored within this period, the system will regain control and continue the profile.
If power is not restored, the profile will terminate.
Dealing with a System Failure During a Run
Although the Kryo550-16 has been rigorously designed and tested to provide utmost
reliability, it is recognised that faults may occur that can cause a run to stop prematurely.
The run has stopped prematurely
A run could stop prematurely if, for example, the liquid-nitrogen supply is used up, there is a
power failure, or the controller cannot respond to the profile. The first task is to protect the
samples if at all possible.
To protect your samples
If you can hear the solenoid valve operating normally, LEAVE THE MACHINE
RUNNING; the program will probably finish correctly.
If the solenoid valve has stopped for more than two minutes and the profile should be
cooling, estimate the temperature of the samples by:
reading the temperature from the display or from
DeltaT
, or
estimating the amount of time that the program has been running, or
inserting a thermometer (suitable for use to -200 ºC ) into the chamber through the
exhaust port.
If the samples are above their freezing point, allow them to warm up.
If the freezer is not responding, but mains power and liquid nitrogen are available and the
samples are below their freezing point, use the manual override buttons on the interface
panel to take the chamber to the final temperature.
When you have removed the samples, press the reset button on interface panel .
To deal with a system failure
1.
Switch off the power to the Kryo550-16 using the mains on/off switch at the rear.
2.
Reset the Kryo550-16’s microprocessor. The reset button is operated by inserting the
tip of a ball-point pen or similar tool through the hole in the interface panel located
just above the manual override buttons.
3.
Run two or three trial profiles to ensure that there is no permanent fault.
