Spectrum RX I Getting Started Guide . 51
Notice the following:
•
The command line is now raised, indicating that the Spectrum RX I is no
longer waiting for a command.
•
The command line reports that the Spectrum RX I is collecting one scan
and will store it in the Backg spectrum region.
•
The status reports that the scan is in single-beam mode, the mode for
background scans.
•
A clock face beside the scan status box tells you to wait for a spectrum to be
displayed.
When the scan is complete, the background spectrum is displayed briefly. It is
immediately replaced by empty axes. Ready For Next Command returns, with
BACKG
replaced by
Survey
.
The background spectrum is not permanently displayed because you are
usually not interested in it: you are usually interested in the ratio spectrum of
your sample. The ratio spectrum will appear, when you collect it, in the empty
axes that are displayed.

To display the background spectrum, press
Backg
.
The background spectrum appears. The curved profile of the background
spectrum is characteristic of the infrared source, the beamsplitter, the
detector, and any window materials in the optical path (for example, the
parylene coating of the optics appears as bands between 2975 and 2825
cm
-1
). Also, atmospheric water vapor appears as bands in the regions
3950 to 3500 cm
-1
and 1950 to 1300 cm
-1
, and CO
2
appears as a band in
the region 2400 to 2300 cm
-1
and a sharp band at 662 cm
-1
.
