Spectrum RX I Getting Started Guide . 49
Scanning and Viewing a Spectrum
Now that your Spectrum RX I is fully installed, we suggest that you familiarize
yourself with the instrument and install any peripheral devices you have
(printers, plotters, and so on).
The installation of peripheral devices is described in the
Communica ing wi h
Other Devices
section of
Advanced Opera ions.

The next section gives you a brief introduction to collecting spectra with the
Spectrum RX I.

Before you collect the sample spectrum, you need to collect a background
spectrum. When you have both background and sample spectra, the Spectrum
RX I can generate a ratio spectrum, which has background effects removed.
When Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers such as the Spectrum
RX I are used to collect infrared spectra, the data they collect are influenced
not only by the sample, but also by the characteristics of the spectrometer: the
infrared source, detector, beamsplitter, and window material all contribute to
the spectrum. Also, any infrared-active species in the optical path (in particular,
atmospheric CO
2
and water vapor) add to the spectrum.
To remove instrument and atmospheric characteristics, you must collect a
spectrum without a sample; this is the background spectrum of the
spectrometer. The Spectrum RX I can then divide the sample spectrum by the
background spectrum to calculate a ratio spectrum, which is free from
background effects.
