secondary fuel filter kit are installed
on the fuel filter caps. Do not reuse
old O-Rings.

2.

Lightly coat the O-Rings with clean
diesel fuel.

3.

Install the primary and secondary
fuel filter elements (3) into the
caps.

4.

Fill the housings (4) halfway with
clean, filtered diesel fuel to aid in
priming.

5.

Reinstall the primary and
secondary fuel filter caps (1) by
rotating them clockwise until the O-
Rings on the caps make contact
with the housing.

6.

Tighten the caps to 30 lb-ft +/- 6
(40 Nm +/-8), as specified on the
caps.

7.

Bleed the fuel system thoroughly
using the hand primer pump (6).

8.

See "Priming the Fuel System" and
follow the procedure carefully. Note
that this will include starting the
engine.

9.

Install the fuel tank filler cap.

NOTE

Make sure that the diesel fuel and your
hands are clean.

NOTE

Part number (5) is the water drain spi-
got used in the Water Draining Proce-
dure.

NOTE

Depending on the vehicle’s fuel sys-
tem configuration the fuel filter housing
may not completely drain of fuel. If this
is the case, take care when installing
the new filter as this may cause fuel to
spill from the filter housing.

Priming the Fuel System

To start the engine after the fuel tank has
run dry, or after the fuel system service has
been performed,complete the following
steps:

CAUTION

The  following  instructions  should  be
used  in  emergency  situations  when
the  fuel  tank  has  run  dry,  or  after  the
fuel  system  service  has  been  per-
formed.  Failure  to  follow  the  starting
instructions  below  may  damage  the
starter motor.

Fuel Filter Module, Priming Pump - MX-11

1.

Loosen the fuel primer pump knob
by rotating it counter-clockwise.
