OPTICS (Proximity Sensors)___________________________________
Proximity Sensors operate under the electrical principle of inductance.
Inductance is the phenomenon where a fluctuating current induces an
electromotive force (magnetic current) in a target object.
When a metal object moves into the sensor’s field of detection, Eddy
circuits build up in the object, magnetically push back and finally reduce
the sensor’s own oscillation field, thus triggering the output circuitry.
There are 5 proximity sensors used within the i5:
Top brush upper limit sensor
Top brush safety sensor
Rear driver side brush sensor
Rear passenger side brush sensor
Gantry drive count-up sensor
Gantry “Home” sensor
Gantry “Count Correction” sensor
Failure of any of these sensors will result in a “Fault” on the HMI screen.
See page (23) for instructions on how to clear a fault.
*Note: If the LED light on the proximity sensor is lit with no metallic
object within read range, it is possible that the sensor needs to be replaced.
