Basic settings
Shoulder straps
The shoulder straps must be adjusted to suit the height of the pilot. The correct
position is when the strap is loose enough so that it does not press into the shoulder
when the pilot is seated, but it is tight enough to support the pilot (when, for example,
weight-shifting in a turn).
The length of the strap is completely adjustable. Using the loops located above the
NOVA logos on the shoulder straps they can be extended; using the loops at the
shoulder strap ends, they can be shortened. Again, it is essential that both straps
are symmetric.
Lumbar straps
The seating position can be adjusted using the lumbar straps. Some pilots prefer a
slightly reclined position, other prefer to sit upright. The most important thing is that
whatever position is selected, the pilot should be comfortable. Pulling the loops at
the ends of the lumbar straps makes the seating position more upright. Pulling the
strap at the buckle end allows a more reclined position. Again, it is essential that
both straps are symmetric.
Leg loops
The leg loops connect the pilot to the seat plate and therefore the harness. The
left buckle is red, the right green. Always connect matching coloured components
together. This helps to prevent attaching the buckles the wrong way. Because the
ITUS is fitted with a Get-up system, the length of the leg loops is not adjustable.
Chest-strap
The chest-strap width has a significant influence of the flying characteristics of
your harness. The wider, the more agile the handling. The opposite is also correct:
the tighter, the response to weight-shift will be more damped. We deliberately
don’t recommend a general setting. The correct adjustment is one of personal
preference. By pulling the adjustment loop, the strap can be tightened in flight.
Adjustments: basics
Before the first flight, the harness should be adjusted on the ground. Clip the harness
into a secure mounting (e.g. a hang frame), sit in it and close the buckles. It is even more
helpful if you wear your usual flying clothes – a thick jacket can have a marked influence
on the seating position. Please test your adjustments in calm flying conditions. While in
the air, make note of the changes you wish to make. After the flight you can then make
further adjustments to change the harness settings.
Please note:
regardless of how you adjust the harness – it is essential that the adjust-
ments are symmetric. Asymmetric adjustments can lead to turns and therefore unin-
tended negative consequences in extreme flight situations.
X
Before each take off, check that the buckles are correctly connected and
securely fastened. You will know if they are completely closed when you hear the
distinctive ‘click’ sound. Taking off without connecting the buckles can be fatal. The
main hang points as well as the leg-loop buckles are colour-coded. The left side is red,
the right side is green. Many NOVA paraglider risers use the same colour-coding. This
helps to prevent clipping in the wrong way
