No protector can preclude or completely prevent injuries in the case of an accident.
Impact protection in particular can never fully guarantee the prevention of damage
to the spine, but only limit the extent of the injury. The inbuilt harness protections
will only ever protect the parts of the pilot’s body that are covered by these
protections. Any changes made to the inbuilt harness protections which are not
expressly recommended or carried out by the manufacturer, or in the case of
improper use, the effect of these protections can be dangerously reduced or lost. If a
protector is removed from the harness and the harness is used without this protector,
there is no safeguarding for the pilot. Physical limits apply to the protectors, outside
of which an intended protective function may be restricted. These include a limited
operating temperature spectrum, expansion times after compression or minimum
recovery times after impact loads.
Inspecting the pre-inflated airbag
After reversing the harness, the airbag fills automatically. Because it has no vents, the
air is sucked in via gaps in the seam. It can take up to one minute to fill the harness
completely when the airbag is hanging freely (e.g. pilot standing in the harness or hang-
ing in a hang frame).

Reversible harness
The ITUS was designed as a reversible harness and is delivered as such. Instructions
on reversing and packing it correctly can be seen in the ITUS – PACK video.
Delivery
In advance of a sale, a NOVA Partner must check the harness and ensure it is adjusted
to the basic settings for the individual pilot. Any defects should have been identified
before first use.

Protector systems
The NOVA ITUS is fitted with two protectors:
• A pre-inflated airbag, that extends from the seat plate to the lower back. This
alleviates two disadvantages of classic airbag protectors: because it is pre-inflated,
the airbag protects the pilot even before take off. And the polycarbonate seat plate
built into the ITUS prevents the airbag from moving sideways on impact.
• For additional back protection, there is a viscoelastic soft foam protector made by
the German SAS-TEC company. With excellent impact absorption rates, this provides
additional protection in the spinal area.
With this combination of two protection systems, the ITUS offers a high level of passive
safety. However, it has to be acknowledged that any protection system has limitations.
By far the most effective safety measure is active flying and a correct assessment of
the risks.
