Using an External Modem
Using an External Modem
You can connect an external modem to the AUX port on the rear of the
NAP. This allows you to use a remote console to communicate with the
IP100 Series NAP when you do not have access to the device via a
console directly connected to the unit or via a network connection.
Using an external modem involves three steps:
Step 1—Connecting a modem to the NAP
Step 2—Configuring the modem
Step 3—Setting modem command strings
The last step depends upon which specific modem you use.
Step 1—Connecting a Modem
To connect a modem to the NAP, you will need a straight-through serial
cable, with a DB-9 connector at one end and a modem-appropriate
connector at the other end. (For cable specifications, see APPENDIX
B, Cables.)
Follow these procedures:
A.
Use the cable to connect the modem to the AUX port on the rear
panel of the NAP. This port is configured to COM2.
B.
Connect the other end of the cable to the modem, using an
appropriate connector (DB-9 or DB-25).
C.
Connect one end of a telephone cable to the phone line and the
other to the modem. Figure 2-6 shows an external modem
connected to the NAP.
