Closed Caption
sub-section
SD to HD Upconversion:
The closed-captioning information from line 21 field 1 and the V-chip information from line 21 field 2 of the
incoming 525-line signal may be inserted as ancillary packets required for FCC compliance. NTSC and DTV
closed captions will be embedded, in the HD outputs, within EIA-708-B packets as per SMPTE 334M. CC1
from NTSC field 1 is up-converted to DTV service 1, and CC3 from field 2 is up-converted to DTV service 2.
HD to SD Downconversion:
As described in EIA-708-B, closed captioning within an HD signal is embedded in the form of ANC packets.
The XVP-801i extracts the NTSC CC bytes from within incoming EIA-708-B DTV closed captions, buffers,
and re-inserts the data within line 21 of the output SD signals. Processing is restricted to NTSC CC
information only.
The XVP-801i also supports incoming EIA-608-B CC packets conforming to SMPTE 334M. However, EIA-
708-B packets have priority. If both are embedded in the source, the EIA-708-B packets are decoded, as
explained above, and the EIA-608-B packets are discarded. If no EIA-708-B packets are detected, EIA-608-
B packets are automatically extracted if detected.
Field 2 of closed captioning is also processed and encoded to provide V-chip rating.
HD to HD Cross-conversion:
EIA-708-B closed captions are detected at the input and re-inserted into the output HD signal conforming to
the selected output HD format.
The
Closed Caption
sub-section also incorporates a status indicator, which turns green in the presence of
incoming EIA-708-B or EIA-608-B closed captioning data when an HD source is installed or when line 21
closed captions are detected when an SD source is installed.
The Insertion pull-down menu is used to select between
Auto
or
OFF
. Availability of these controls is
affected by whether or not Line 21 of the input signal has been blanked; see
SD/HD Input Config
on page 9
for details.
Timecode (DVITC)
sub-section, HD output
If the input is HD SDI, the HD ATC packet will be transcoded only when ATC timecode is present on the HD
input video. In the case of an SD input, the DVITC in the VBI interval is transcoded in an ATC timecode
packet for the HD output. When enabled, timecode insertion is automatic when there is embedded timecode
in the source.
A presence detector turns green when timecode is detected in the incoming signal
Insertion options are available through a pull-down menu, offering these choices:
AUTO: Time code is inserted if present; insertion is disabled if no time code is present.
OFF:
Time code insertion at the output is disabled.
Timecode (DVITC)
sub-section, SD output
In addition to the
Insertion
pull-down box described above, an insertion line may be specified and the
timecode line may be duplicated for SD output. These controls are only available when input is HD; for SD
input, timecode is in bypass mode.
Insert Line:
the line on which timecode is to be inserted is selectable through a pull-down menu, between
lines
10
and
20
for 525-line output, and between lines
7
and
22
for 625-line output.
