Tow -starting and Towing the Vehicle
Please keep in mind th a t considerably
more effort is necessary to ste e r and
brake the car while the engine is not
running since there is no servo-as-
sistance.
Emergency Engine Start
(Tow-starting)
Shift selector lever to “ N ” and turn
key in steering lock to position “ 2 ” .
Have vehicle towed. Having attained a
speed of 30 km /h/18 mph — cold
transm ission — or 50 k m /h /3 0 mph
— warm transm ission — keep on
driving at this speed fo r a pproxi
mately 2 minutes to ensure sufficient
fluid pressure in the transm ission.
To crank the engine, sh ift selector
lever to “ S” . Touch the accelerator
only when the engine sta rts firing.
As soon as the engine has started,
immediately return se le cto r lever to
“ N ". It is im portant to allow the
engine to idle fo r at least 1 m inute
before starting o ff because the
preglowing process sta rts when the
key is in steering lock po sitio n “ 2 ”
and is not immediately d isru p te d after
the engine has been to w -sta rte d .
During this time the preglow ing
process is cut o u t autom atically.
If the engine has not fired after a few
seconds, shift the s e le cto r lever from
“ S ” to “ N " to p ro te ct the tra n sm is
sion from damage.
For a new starting attem pt, to w -sta rt
the vehicle fo r som e tim e again w ith
the selector lever in po sitio n “ N ” and
repeat the starting procedure.
The same m ethod can be used to
start the engine in em ergencies when
rolling downhill.
Towing a Vehicle
The vehicle may be tow ed w ith the
driving wheels on the ground and the
s e le cto r lever in position “ N” fo r
distances up to 120 km /75 miles and
at a speed not to exceed
50 k m /h /3 0 mph.
To positively avoid a possibility of
damage to the transm ission, how
ever, we recom m end to d isconnect
the drive shaft at the rear axle drive
flange on any tow ing beyond a short
to w to a nearby garage.
