Throttle Control
The throttle lever is located to the right of the driver.
When the throttle is vertical, it is in the NEUTRAL position.
Some model throttle levers are equipped with a neutral shift
lock activation button at the base of the throttle control
(Figure 2-19a). Pulling outward on this button and pulling up
on the safety collar disengages the transmission, thereby
allowing use of the throttle without engaging the transmission.
This is used for warm-up of the engine in NEUTRAL. Be sure
to position the throttle vertically (in NEUTRAL), before
re-engaging the transmission, by depressing the neutral shift lock activation button.
The VTX model has a similar shift lock mechanism that
offers the same transmission disengaging features. The only
exception is that you depress the neutral shift lock
activation button and lift up on the safety collar (Figure
2-19b). With this throttle control, there is an indicator light
that illuminates when the neutral shift lock is engaged.
The throttle control shown in Figure 2-20 does not have the
neutral shift lock activation button. When you push the button
on the top of the throttle control you can shift the transmission
into forward or reverse.
Do not shift from forward to reverse at
high RPMs; damage to the transmission
will result. When shifting from forward to
reverse you must stop in the NEUTRAL
position, doing this allows the engine to
run in its idle position before moving into
the opposite gear. Moving the shift lever
from FORWARD to REVERSE without
stopping in NEUTRAL can cause the
transmission to “slam” into gear, damaging the transmission
and/or causing the engine to shut off. This will cause
temporary loss of boat control which can cause damage and/or
injury to the boat and/or persons in or around the boat.
Before starting the engine or engaging transmission, ensure
all swimmers are out of the water.
