through the cornea, lens, and vitreous regions of the eye. If the patient’s eye does not allow good
transmission or introduces some dispersion of the beam, then the patient is not suitable for this
type of laser treatment. Increasing the laser power and pulse duration will generate more heat,
enhancing the coagulative effect.
CAUTION!
The surrounding tissue may sustain some damage if the power or duration of
exposure is too high. A careful power and pulse duration selection is essential in producing a
successful treatment. Refer to
Section 6 Clinical Use
in this Manual for further information.
4.2
Laser System Operation
This system consists of two major parts, as described below:
No.
Item
Description
1
Laser
console
•
Houses the electronic control system and power supplies, such as:
o
Laser diode (670 or 810 nm), or diode-pumped solid-state laser
(DPSL) (561 nm), or optically pumped semiconductor laser
(OPSL) (532 or 577 nm).
o
Optics system.
o
Thermal electric coolers and driver units.
o
Electronic microprocessor control system.
o
Power supply
•
Connects the following LDUs:
o
Slit lamp integrated into CSO model SL950.
o
Slit lamp attachment for CSO model SL950 and other Haag Streit
models.
o
Slit lamp attachment for Zeiss model SL30 slit lamp.
o
LIO.
o
Endo photocoagulation handpieces (endoprobes).
2
LCD
screen
Integrated with a computer platform.
For each LDU, its unique delivery key needs to be plugged into the laser console for the system
to determine which type of LDU is connected. If no delivery key is inserted, then the warning
message will be displayed on the LCD screen. Operation of the console controls will not be
permissible until the correct delivery key is equipped. The delivery key serves as an additional
safety feature that prevents unauthorized use of the laser system. It is attached to the fiber of
each LDU to eliminate any risk of inserting the wrong delivery key. Each LDU has a different
amount of loss through the optical elements, therefore, the output power calibration will be
different for every LDU. It is essential that the correct calibrated power is delivered to the patient.
It is essential that the correct calibrated power is delivered to the patient. When using the LDUs,
a microscope doctor safety filter (DSF) is required to protect the user from unexpected reflections
that can cause eye injury during the treatments. The DSF is mounted in the beam path of the
microscope.
