System Check
Make sure the glass frame is removed prior to the systems
check
1. PURGING THE GAS LINE:
When lighting the appliance
for the first time, it will take a few moments to clear the
gas line of air. Once this purge is complete, the appliance
will operate as described in the lighting instructions. From
a cold start, it may be helpful to let the pilot light burn for
10 - 15 minutes to establish positive draft, before turning
the burner on. See the procedure on the inside back cover
of this manual. Subsequent burner starts will not require
purging the gas line unless the supply line is shut off.
2. PILOT FLAME: You can monitor the pilot flame behind
the burner in the cut-out under the rear log. See fig. 7.16,
pg. 20. The pilot flame should be steady - not lifting or
floating. The flame should be blue in color around the pilot
hood, with traces of yellow toward the outer edges.
The pilot flame should engulf the thermocouple and
thermopile and project from the pilot hood forward to
the burner carry-over ports. Adjust pilot flame intensity
using the adjustment screw located to the right of the valve
regulator knob. See fig. 7.3 pg. 15.
3. MANUAL BURNER ADJUSTMENT: This stove is
equipped with a variable gas control valve that allows manual
adjustment of the flame height and heat output. To adjust
the flame intensity, rotate the regulator knob.
Flame height will adjust approximately 30% between the
LOW and HIGH settings.
NO SMOKE OR SOOT SHOULD BE PRESENT.
CHECK LOG PLACEMENT IF SOOT OR SMOKE IS
PRESENT. IF SOOT OR SMOKE PERSISTS, THE AIR
SHUTTER(S) MAY NEED TO BE ADJUSTED.
See Flame Appearance / Air Shutter for air shutter settings
and adjustments on the next page. Note: The more offsets
there are in the vent system, the greater the need for an air
shutter adjustment.
4. Burner Light-off Timing
: This test confirms correct pilot-to-
burner ignition.
A)
Set the gas valve regulator to LOW.
B) Cold Start:
Turn the burner ON at the switch and
countdown in seconds the time for full burner ignition; that
is, all burner ports are projecting flame.
Full burner ignition
should occur within 4 seconds of switching ON. See
troubleshooting in the Ceramic Burner Guide if greater than
4 seconds.
Reinstall the glass frame prior to hot start testing.
C) Hot Start:
After the burner has been on for 5-10 minutes,
turn it off and wait 2 minutes. Turn it on and a gain record the
time for full ignition.
Full burner ignition should occur within
4 seconds of switching ON. Test condition with burner on
low. If burner takes longer than 4 seconds to ignite call Jøtul
Tech service for assistance.
Flame Appearance / Air Shutter
Adjustment
Locate the Primary Air Shutter control under the firebox
floor above the gas valve. See fig. 7.17. The shutter is set
at the midpoint of its adjustment range at the factory.
This will give good results in the majority of installation
configurations, however, you may need find it necessary to
adjust it to get the best flame picture depending upon the
your specific installation.
With the burner operating, loosen the wingnut on
the shutter stem. Push the stem back toward the rear of
the stove will decrease combustion air. Pull it forward to
increase air.
Generally, flame appearance is a matter of individual
preference, however a warm yellowish flame is most
common. If flame tips appear more orange, open the
shutter.
Closing the air shutter - in extreme cases may generate
very long yellow flames resulting in soot. Sooting
produces black deposits on the logs, on the inside walls of
the appliance, and potentially on the exterior termination
cap.
Sooting is caused by incomplete combustion in the
flames and lack of combustion air entering the air shutter
opening.
Opening the air shutter - will generate a flame that is
blue and transparent, or “anemic”. This flame is generally
more efficient, but not as attractive.
Allow the burner to operate at the highest setting for
10-15 minutes before making any adjustments. Always
make adjustments in 1/8” increments and allow the
burner to settle in for 10- 15 minutes between additional
adjustments.
WARNING:
AIR SHUTTER ADJUSTMENTS SHOULD ONLY
BE PERFORMED BY A QUALIFIED, PROFES-
SIONAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN.
Note: This appliance is equiped with a timed
pilot that will automatically extinguish if there
has been no manual or thermostatic call for heat
after seven (7) days.
To relight the pilot, follow
the normal manual lighting instructions located
on the inside back cover of this manual and on
the back of the stove rating plate.
