SECTION 26 – OIL PIPING DESIGN
All applicable local and national codes
must be observed when installing the
burn er, oil tank, and oil lines. Correct
in stal la tion and pipe connections are the
re spon si bil i ty of the installer.
OIL PIPING DESIGN
It is important that a consistent source of oil is sup-
plied to the burner oil pump in order to ensure a reli-
able burn er operation.
Steel and copper can be used as oil lines. Copper lines
are preferred for #2 fuel oil. A two-line system is also
preferred for single or multiple #2 oil type burner sys-
tems. With this type of system any air bubbles in the
oil are returned to the oil tank along the return line.
However, on two-line systems the following must be
met:
1. Suction pressure must not exceed -15" W.C. (-0.4
bar).
2. The lift of the oil must not exceed 13 ft. (4.0 m).
If these criteria cannot be met, then it is necessary to
use a “ring line oil system” for the burner. See burner
in stal la tion and operation manual for this type of oil
piping sys tem.
If an oil meter is installed in the oil return
line, there must be pro tec tion provided
for safe ty in the form of a relief valve. A
blocked oil meter could lead to a burst
oil hose or dam age to the oil pump. It is
rec om mend ed that any shut-off device
in the oil sup ply and oil return lines be
pro tect ed from un in tend ed in di vid u al
clo sure. Non-return valves must not be
installed in the oil re turn line.
The pressure drop of the oil line, oil filters, 90° el-
bows, etc. must be considered when sizing the oil sup-
ply (suc tion) lines to the burner. The suction lift and
supply pres sure can be measured at the burner pump
with ap pro pri ate gauges. The selection of the oil line
size must be based on the maximum capacity of the
burner oil pump(s) (not the actual oil consumption rate
of the burner), vis cos i ty of the oil, and the length of
piping. See
For single burner installations, it is recommended that
the oil supply and return lines are the same size. For
multiple burner installations, it is recommended that
in di vid u al supply lines are run to each burner. How-
ever, a common return line can be used.
