SECTION 12 – BURNER INSTALLATION (POWER FLAME BURNERS)
Johnson Controls generally uses the Power Flame Type
“C” mod u la tion burner on the ParaFlow
TM
absorption
chiller line. These burners use the principles of pres-
sure at om i za tion for oil and multiple orifice, venturi
operation for gas. The total pack age utilizes the forced
draft, flame retention concept. The Type “C” burner is
listed and la beled by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.
The burners range in inputs from 2553 MBH for the
small er S-series models to 10,418 MBH for the larger
sizes. They can be fired using either gas (natural or
pro pane) or #2 fuel oil. A gas pilot burner is used for
both gas and oil operation. Some burners, even though
they may be strictly oil-fired, may require a gas flame
ignitor pilot be used in stead of electrode flame ig ni-
tion. Usually any Power Flame burn er larger than a
CR4-(G)O-25, or a burn er that has an oil us age ca pac-
i ty of greater than 60 gpm, requires that a gas pilot be
used.
Refer to Appendix A
dard burn er information for all mod el units.
The Power Flame Type “C” burner is a totally pack-
aged and fac to ry tested combustion system offering
single unit re spon si bil i ty. The package incorporates
accurate con trol of the fuel-air ratio throughout the
firing range with the re sult ant controlled flame pat-
terns and clean com bus tion for maximum efficiency.
Combustion air flow is controlled by a double lou-
vered damper assembly. The combustion air is sup-
plied by an integral motor-driven blower, which dis-
charges into the burner blast tube as sem bly. The air / fuel
ratio is established at the time of start-up and proven
with combustion test equipment to provide the highest
practical carbon dioxide with a clean flame.
All ParaFlow
TM
standard shipment
absorption units
have the burn er preinstalled at the Johnson Controls
factory. The units are shipped with the burner pre-
wired to the appropriate con trol pan el. A remote fuel
oil pump is shipped sep a rate ly on gas / oil units. Gas
train components will always be shipped separately
and will require field mounting. A pedestal accompa-
nies the burners ship loose items for field installation
under the burner.
MODEL IDENTIFICATION
The numerical suffix after the letter C denotes the
burner frame size. The letter R in sert ed immediately
after the letter C denotes an inverted blower configu-
ration.
The alphabetical designation immediately following
the frame size indicates the fuels to be used: G is gas
only; O, oil only; and GO, is for combination gas/oil.
The two numbers following the fuel designation de-
notes the standard gas train size. (Selected compo-
nents may be different pipe sizes than the nominal
train size cod ed).

The model number listed in the example is depicted
through out this section of the manual. This burner
is used on the ParaFlow
TM
YPC-DF-16G unit. Other
burn ers will vary in physical size but will have the
same con fig u ra tion.
UNPACKING AND HANDLING
ParaFlow
TM
absorption chill ers are shipped with the
burner(s) mounted and pre-wired to the appropriate
control panel. The gas train and fuel oil pump (if oil
burner) are shipped separately and will require field
mounting.
Remove the shrink wrap from the burner carefully and
check all parts received against the Burner As Built
Spec i fi ca tion Sheet supplied by the burner manufac-
turer. This step should have been done at the initial
