C. Compressors:
The motor and other working parts of the hermetic scroll compressors used in
this unit are sealed and are not intended to be serviceable. In the event a
compressor should fail, it should be replaced. Therefore, no compressor
service information is provided in the manufacturer's appendices of this
manual.
(1) Servicing Compressor Oil
CAUTION
DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL OR OTHER OILS NOT SPECIFICALLY APPROVED BY
THE COMPRESSOR MANUFACTURER.
The necessity for adding oil to a compressor crankcase is caused by a
loss of oil when the system was open, or by a failure to replenish oil for
system-wide distribution when the oil was replaced. The oil to be used in
the compressor is specially refined refrigerant oil as recommended by the
compressor manufacturer. Units are shipped with the correct amount and
type of oil installed. It is not normally necessary to add oil to the
compressor before using the equipment for the first time.
In the event compressor oil is to be removed and replaced, the
compressor body should be fully pumped down and the oil drained from
the compressor crankcase. If oil is to be added to an existing quantity of
oil in the crankcase, the additional oil may be applied with the unit under
automatic pump down pressure. Deep system pump down is not required.
NOTE
Oil level should normally be checked when the unit has been operating for
approximately ten (10) minutes. Checking oil level when the unit is shutdown
or just after start-up may result in a false reading.
The compressor crankcase oil level is visible through the sight glass
located in the side of the crankcase body. Oil should be added to the
compressor crankcase when the oil level is below the halfway mark of the
oil sight glass. (See Figure 4)
The compressor oil is specifically formulated based on the refrigerant used
in the system.
•
Systems using R-22 refrigerant use Trane
00042 (mineral oil)
•
Systems using R-134a or R-407c refrigerant use Solest
68 (synthetic
oil)
