Understanding how the management port functions
You must be aware of how the system’s management port functions as described
in the following:
v
The management port allows you to configure, monitor, and manage the c-series
system only. As a result, this port has the same limited functionality as an IP
host port.
v
You cannot enable and run routing protocols on the management port.
v
The management port supports static routes and directly connected routes,
which are installed in the routing table. However, these routes are not installed
in the ports' routing table. Therefore, the interface ports are not aware of the
management port’s static or directly connected routes.
v
If you configure the redistribution of directly connected or static routes for a
particular routing protocol, the routing protocol will redistribute directly
connected or static routes associated with the interface module ports but not
those associated with the management port.
To display configuration information and statistics about the management port,
you can enter the
show interface management 1
command at any CLI level.
Connecting a c-series switch
You can connect a c-series switch to another Ethernet network device.
To connect a switch to another network device, you must do the following:
v
Install the SFP or XFP transceivers if required by the media type.
v
Cable the modules with either copper cable (CAT 5e, CAT 6 or higher) or fiber
cables (single-mode or multi-mode) as required
Installing a SFP or XFP transceiver
To connect a switch to another network device using a SFP or XFP port, do the
following:
v
Install SFP transceiver or XFP transceiver as required by the physical port.
CAUTION:
All fiber-optic transceivers use Class 1 Lasers.
Before installing a SFP or XFP transceiver, have on hand an ESD wrist strap with a
plug for connection to the ESD connector on the chassis.
CAUTION:
For safety reasons, the ESD wrist strap should contain a 1 meg ohm series
resistor.
To install a SFP or XFP transceiver into a port, do the following:
1.
Put on the ESD wrist strap and ground yourself by inserting the plug into the
ESD connector located in the upper right corner of the chassis back (non-port)
side.
2.
Remove the transceiver from its protective packaging.
3.
Gently insert the transceiver into the port until the transceiver clicks into place.
The SFP and XFP transceivers are keyed to prevent incorrect insertion.
