Demo 3: PLL Frequency Settling
It is often useful to characterize the performance of the PLL or data
separator circuitry to determine its lock-up time, jitter, and other dynamic
behavior, perhaps as a clue to optimize margin in the design. This
demonstration will show the HP E1741A’s ability to display the frequency
settling characteristic of a PLL. A frequency step was applied to a PLL
(not a disk drive PLL, as you will see by the settling time), and the
resulting output measured as frequency settling. This data has been
stored, and will be recalled for this demonstration. The HP E1741A will
display the result as “Frequency versus time.”
Start
1 Select File>Use saved data.
2 Open the demo subdirectory and click on the file “settle.tid.”
3 Click the OK button.
4 Select Control>TIA Setup [expanded].
