5.6 Pump calibration
To ensure that the volume and flow rate values are accurate, the control unit has to be
calibrated. It has to be set up how much volume (µl) the pump displaces per revolution.
Depending on the pump type and tolerances, this can be between 10 µl and 80 µl.
This volume can be easily measured as with each control unit a measuring pipette is delivered.
As an alternative to the enclosed measuring pipette, more finely graduated commercially
available types made of glass, or even plastic disposable syringes could be used.
The calibration affects the conformity of the displayed values with the actual dosed values, not
the absolute repeatability of doses.
After all modifications affecting the pump, especially after stator or product exchange the
calibration process should be run through.
The pump must be filled with product, vented and the system ready for dispensing.
The outlet of the pump is now connected to the tip end of the measuring pipette, for example
with the help of a piece of OD 6 mm pneumatic hose. With highly viscous products the tip end of
the plastic pipette should be shortened by approximately 8 mm in order to obtain a larger inlet
cross-section. Use the rinsing key to fill the connecting hose and the front end of the pipette up
to the first line of the scale.
Then – from the start screen – select the key
for the extended settings, and from the
extended settings the key for the device
settings.
At the top right of the device settings is the
symbol for pump calibration. If this is
touched, the drive will move the pump shaft
exactly 10 times.
This can be performed once or several times
in a series, to get finer reading and better
averaging.
Then the additional volume dispensed during
the calibration is read off accurately on the
scale of the measuring pipette (the scale lines
each correspond to 100 µl) and divided by the
number of revolutions.
If for example 1.45 further scale lines of
product were dispensed during a calibration
(with 10 revolutions),
145 µl is divided by 10 = 14.5 µl.
This value is then entered in the field below
as the pump calibration.
To complete the calibration, all parameters
should be permanently saved in the menu
one level higher.
