Sawing trees
_ Make a horizontal cut to one third of the
diameter of the trunk. Subsequently make
a diagonal cut at a 45° angle from top to
bottom so that a notch is created.
_ Make a cut on the other side, but make
sure that you do not saw through the notch.
_ Place a wedge in the cut to make an
opening and drop the tree.
Felling trees is dangerous and
requires practice. If you are a
beginner or inexperienced, do not
try to teach yourself but seek
professional training.
APPROPRIATE FELLING,
DISCONNECTING AND CUTTING
TECHNIQUES
BB.1 Felling a tree
When cutting and felling by two or more people at
the same time time, it is advisable to separate the
felling operations from the cutting operation by a
distance of at least twice the height of the tree
subject to felling.
Trees should not be felled in a way that could
endanger the people, colliding with a distribution line
in the network or causing any material damage. If
the tree makes contact with a network distribution
line, it should to immediately communicate this state
of affairs to the company in charge of the network.
The chain saw operator should stay upstream of the
ground given that the tree is likely to roll or slide
down after felling.
An evacuation path should be plan ned and cleared
as much as necessary before start the cuts. The
escape route should be extended to the rear and
diagonal behind the intended line of fall as shown in
Figure BB.101.
Before starting felling, take into consideration the
natural inclination of the tree, the situation of the
largest branches and the direction of the wind to
assess the way the tree will fall.
Remove dirt, stones, pieces of bark, staples, and
wires from the tree.
BB.2 Clearance notch
Make the notch on 1/3 of the diameter of the shaft,
perpendicular to the direction of the fall as shown in
Figure BB.102. Make the lower horizontal notch cut
first.
This will prevent the cutting chain or guide bar from
being pinched during the execution of the second
notch.
BB.3 Slaughter mark
Make the felling line at a level at least 50 mm higher
than the notch cut horizontal as shown in Figure
BB.102. Keep the felling line parallel to the cut
horizontal notch. Make the felling line so as to leave
enough wood for serve as a hinge. The hinge wood
prevents the twisting movement of the shaft and its
fall in the wrong direction. Do not cut through the
hinge.
As the felling gets closer to the hinge, the tree
normally begins to fall. If he there is any risk that the
tree does not fall in the desired direction or that
swing back and stuck the cutting chain, stop the cut
before you have completed the felling line and use
wooden, plastic or aluminum wedges to open
the notch and drop the tree along the desired fall
line.
When the tree begins to fall, remove the chainsaw
from the notch, stop the engine, put the chainsaw
on the ground, then use the escape route provided.
Watch out for falling branches above your head and
pay attention to where you step.
BB.4 Limbing a tree
Limbing is the removal of branches from a tree after
it has fallen. When delimbing, leave the lower, larger
branches to support the log above the ground.
Remove small branches in a single cut as shown in
Figure BB.103. It suits cut branches under tension
from the bottom to avoid jamming the chainsaw.
BB.5 Cutting a log
Bucking consists of cutting a log into sections. It is
important to make sure that your
footing is firm and your weight is evenly distributed
over both feet. Yes possible, the log should be lifted
and supported by branches, logs or
wedges. Follow simple directions to make cutting
easier.
When the log rests along its entire length as shown
in Figure BB.104, it is cut from above (upper
parting).
When the log rests on only one end, as shown in
Figure BB.105, cut 1/3 of the diameter of the side
below (lower cut-off). Then finish
cutting by cutting from above to meet the first cut.
When the log rests on both ends, as shown in
Figure BB.106, cut 1/3 diameter from the upper part
(upper parting). Then finish the cut by cutting the
bottom 2/3 from below in order to meet the
first cut.
When cutting on a slope, always stand upstream of
the log, as illustrated in Figure BB.107. When
"cutting through" the log, in order to maintain a
complete one
control, release the cutting pressure near the end of
the cut without releasing your
grip at the handles of the chain saw. Do not let the
chain touch the ground.
After completing the cut, wait for the cutting chain to
stop before moving the saw chain. Always stop the
engine before moving from tree to tree.
