The remote start signal may also be wired to one of the PM-PCs in

addition to the PM-SC. This can be done so that at least one gen-

erator will start and connect to the Bus to provide critical power in

the event that the PM-SC is unable to control the MPS.
If the remote start signal from the ATS(s) fails, placing the PM-SC

key switch in the MANUAL position will start the MPS as though a

remote start command was received. All the units will parallel, per-

missives be issued, etc. This is a new feature. Previously, placing

the PM-SC key switch in the MANUAL position had no function.

3.11.6  MANUAL BACKUP OPERATION

This mode of operation requires a trained operator to intervene in

the event of a system failure. The manual backup operation is avail-

able with PM-PC and PM-SC firmware version 2.2H or later. The

PM-PC touch screens must have screen firmware version 1.02 or

later. The manual backup operation consists of the normal MPS

operation with the added ability to manually request a generator to

synchronize and connect to the Bus. If any of the generators are

operating in a backup mode, the entire system changes to backup

mode. When the MPS is in a backup mode, the communications

are no longer adequate to provide dynamic power sharing between

the connected generators while maintaining target frequency and

voltage. All the generators attempt to take their share of the load.

This results in the frequency varying by up to 3% and the volt-

age varying by up to 10% depending on the system load. Since

the PM-SC does not have complete knowledge of the system in

backup mode, it will not control the load shed signals and will only

partially control the permissive signals. Therefore, the permissive

signals must be manually operated and the load shed manually

operated as needed.
In addition to having the correct versions of firmware, the version

of GenLink must be 2.8.0 or later to allow enabling of the manual

backup feature.

Procedure for Enabling Manual Backup Operation:

Using GenLink, connect to the PM-SC.
Open the “Configuration” pull down menu and select “Regulator

Settings” (Figure 3.10).

Figure 3.10 — Regular Settings

In the lower left corner of the “Regulator Settings Page” is a

section called “Backup Paralleling Options”. Enable the “Manual

Mode” setting (Figure 3.11).

Figure 3.11 — Enable Manual Mode

Close this window and drill down to each generator PM-PC and

repeat this operation on each PM-PC. If the PM-PC(s) and the

PM-SC are not set up the same, power will not be shared correctly

while operating in backup mode.

Procedure for Entering Manual Backup Mode:

The following procedure refers to generator numbers. The genera-

tor number is the ModBus address of that generator. Backup mode

priorities and delays are based on the generator numbers. Also,

the wiring is specified based on the generator number. Therefore,

the generators should be numbered sequentially via GenLink start-

ing at #1.
The MPS will normally have all PM-SC and PM-PC key switches in

the AUTO position. If the PM-SC or any PM-PC is no longer com-

municating with the MPS, an alarm will indicate on the PM-SC,

PM-PC, or both. This alerts the operator to the need for interven-

tion. If the utility power is lost at this time, the following procedure

will allow the operator to put the MPS online manually.
When the utility fails, generator #1 should start if the remote start

has been run to it and connect to the Bus when the generator is

ready for load. If it does not, then start this procedure with genera-

tor #1.
Go to each generator in the MPS that is not running and turn the

key switch to the OFF position.
After all the appropriate key switches are in the OFF position, each

of these generators needs to have their key switch placed in the

MANUAL position and the following touch screen procedure used

to connect them to the Bus. This can be done by switching all

these generators to MANUAL first then going back to connect each

generator to the Bus or go to each generator, switch it to MANUAL

and connect it to the Bus.
Using the generator touch screen main menu, select the Diagnostics

page (Figure 3.12).
