Learn the seafaring rules and the COLREG provisions (International Regulations for
Preventing Collisions at Sea) and follow them. Navigate with care and make sure
your charts are up to date. Books on boating regulations are available in bookstores.
Always adapt your speed to the prevailing conditions and the environment. Pay
attention to the following:
Wave height (also ask your passengers' opinion about comfortable speed)
Your wake wash (the wake wash is at its maximum at the planing threshold
and at its minimum at the displacement speed
– i.e. below 6 knots). Observe
'No wash zone' signs and take other boaters and safety into consideration by
slowing down and reducing your wake when necessary.
Visibility (islands, fog, rain, sunshine)
Familiarity of the route (time needed for navigation)
Narrow and/or crowded waterways (other vessels, noise, wake wash hitting
the shore)
The distance needed for any stopping or evasion maneuvers
5.9.2
Emergency cut-off switch
Attach the emergency cut-off cord to yourself as soon as you have released the
mooring ropes. Please refer to the engine manual for details. If you are operating the
boat alone, it is very important that the engine stop if you go overboard or fall down.
Remember, however, to release the emergency cord before leaving the boat to avoid
stopping the engine unintentionally.
DANGER
A rotating propeller may be fatal if someone falls overboard
or is swimming close to the boat. Always stop the engine
when a swimmer or water-skier is approaching or boarding
the boat.
5.9.3
Visibility from the steering position
It is easy to drive the boat in fair weather when the sea is calm, but remember to
keep sufficient lookout (also a requirement of the COLREG rules). Ensure maximum
visibility at all times from the steering position by following these guidelines:
The positions of the crew and the passengers must not obstruct visibility for
the helmsman
Do not drive at the planing threshold speed for extended periods as the raised
bow blocks forward visibility
Use the engine's power trim function and any trim tabs you may have installed
to adjust the bow so that visibility is not compromised
Also remember to look behind the boat, especially on fairways with fast ships
that may overtake you
Use the navigation lights during darkness or when visibility is limited for any other
reason, such as fog or heavy rain. The switch is located in the steering console.
