2. What is hypertension and how can it be measured?
Hypertension is an arterial pressure that is abnormally elevated, if not cured, it could cause many
health problems including ictus and infarct. Hypertension can be maintained by modifying your life-
style, avoiding stress and following the doctor’s prescriptions.
To prevent hypertension or keep it under control:
•
do not smoke;
•
reduce your intake of salt and fat;
•
keep your weight at an adequate level;
•
exercise regularly;
•
if you suffer from hypertension, you should follow the medical check-ups indicated by your doctor.
3. Why measure your blood pressure at home?
Blood pressure measured in a clinic or a surgery might cause apprehension and produce a higher read-
ing, that could be of 25 to 30 mmHg higher than one measured at home. The measurement at home
reduces the effects of external influences on pressure readings, it integrates the doctor’s readings, which
are always those to be taken as a reference, and supplies a blood pressure analysis.
4. OMS blood pressure classification
The standards for the evaluation of high blood pressure, independently from age, have been estab-
lished by the World Health Organisation (OMS) and recorded in fig.3.
