2.1.2 Print Head
As the print head, this printer employs the same U-CHIPS head as is used with Stylus
Photo 810/820, which permits multiple shot printing and variable printing.
The nozzle arrangements of the print head are described below:

Nozzle Configuration
Monochrome:48 nozzles (120dpi)
Color:

(Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Light cyan, Light magenta) (120dpi)
The nozzle layout as viewed from the back surface of the head is shown below.
Figure 2-2. Nozzle Configuration
The CSIC is mounted on the ink cartridge. By storing ink life data, this IC makes it
possible to control the ink in the ink cartridge unit.
The basic operating principles of the print head, which plays a major role in printing,
are the same as previous models; on-demand method (Stylus Photo 810/820) which
uses PZT (Piezo Electric Element). To ensure a uniform amount of discharged ink, the
print head has its own head ID (13 digits for this print head) which adjusts the PZT
voltage control functions.
The print head stores the head ID in EEPROM and generates an appropriate PZT drive
voltage to prevent amount of ink from varying with print heads.
The following explains print head basic components.
V
PZT
PZT is an abbreviation of Piezo Electric Element. A certain level of voltage expands
and contracts PTZ. The drive wave generated on the MAIN board drives PZT and PZT
pushes the top cavity, which stores ink, to discharge the ink through the nozzles in the
nozzle plate.
V
Electrodes for CSIC
These electrodes are connected to the CSIC chip mounted on the ink cartridges. By
use of these electrodes, the current data on ink consumption is read from the CSIC
chip. In addition, the latest data on ink consumption is written on the CSIC chip.
V
Nozzle Plate
The board with nozzle holes on the print head surface is called Nozzle Plate.
V
Filter
When the ink cartridge is installed, if any dirt or dust around the cartridge needle is
absorbed into the head, there is a great possibility of causing nozzle clog and
disturbance of ink flow, and finally causing alignment failure and dot missing. To
prevent this problem, a filter is set below the cartridge needle, where ink is filtered.
