Sequencer
– A device that records and plays back notes based on information about key strikes and key velocity
rather than recording sound output. A MIDI sequencer records and plays back MIDI information including key
strikes, velocity program changes, etc.
Sostenuto
– Italian for “sustaining the note.” The sostenuto pedal of the Piano will sustain only those notes held
down when the sostenuto pedal is depressed.
Split Point
– The location on the keyboard where one sound ends and another begins. This is usually identified by
the top key of the lower sound. The SPM-1 features a programmable split point for the two bass sounds.
Sustain
– To hold a note. The sustain pedal on the Piano will hold any notes played while the pedal is depressed as
though the keys were held down.
Velocity Sensitivity
– A system of sensors that can determine how hard and fast a key is played. This information
can be applied to control the loudness and brightness of the Piano.
Voice
– A complete sound controlled by a single key. The SPM-1 features ten distinct voices with three oscillators
for each voice.
Waveform
– The shape of a sound wave shown as a function of amplitude and time. Synthesizer oscillators
generate simple waveforms (sine, triangle, etc.) and combine them to create sound. Digitally sampled instruments
such as the SPM-1 generate complex waveforms based on actual sounds that have been recorded (sampled) into
memory.
